A Secret Santa Generator With Exclusions

A random Secret Santa draw doesn't know who's married to whom. Exclusions fix that by ruling certain pairs out before the draw even starts.

What exclusions are

An exclusion is a rule that stops two specific people being matched together. Set one between Alice and Bob, and the draw will never give Alice to Bob or Bob to Alice, no matter how many times you run it.

Why people use them

The most common one: couples who already buy each other Christmas presents and don't need Secret Santa to double up on that. Also handy for siblings living in the same house, a manager and their direct report if that feels a bit much, or any pair who'd rather sit this particular pairing out.

How it works here

Add your participants first, then pick any pairs who shouldn't be matched. You can add as many exclusions as you need, and remove them again before the draw if someone drops out or you change your mind.

When exclusions make a draw impossible

With enough exclusions in a small enough group, there's sometimes no valid way to pair everyone up at all, say three people where each one is excluded from both of the others. If that happens, the draw doesn't run and you're told there's no valid arrangement for that group and its exclusions, so you can remove one and try again.
